Ms. Ashley Abruzzo, Germanna Foundation of Virginia Membership Development Manager (and Germanna descendant) will speak on the history of the first settlement of German speakers in Virginia, called the Germanna Colony.  "Here is the description for my talk. It’s a general overview of Germanna. I don’t dive into the genealogy but do mention the various families from both colonies and how it is that they arrived in Virginia."

The settlement began in 1714 when Virginia’s Lt. Governor Alexander Spotswood imported a group of German miners from the Siegerland.  Spotswood hoped to establish a mining industry in Virginia. He built a palisaded fort for them called Fort Germanna on the western-most frontier of Virginia, situated between what is now Fredericksburg and Culpeper, Virginia.
